Obama Administration Scandals: Robert Mueller delivers report on the Russian government's influence in the 2016 United States presidential election of Donald Trump on March 22, 2019

Robert Mueller delivers report on the Russian government's influence in the 2016 United States presidential election of Donald Trump: On March 22, 2019, The Mueller Report, officially titled Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election, is submitted to Attorney General William Barr.

The Mueller Report, is the official report documenting the findings and conclusions of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 United States presidential election, allegations of conspiracy or coordination between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia, and allegations of obstruction of justice. a redacted version of the 448-page report was publicly released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on April 18, 2019. It is divided into two volumes.

Volume I of the report concludes that the investigation did not find sufficient evidence that the campaign “coordinated or conspired with the Russian government in its election-interference activities”. Investigators ultimately had an incomplete picture of what happened due to communications that were encrypted, deleted, or not saved and due to testimony that was false, incomplete, or declined.

However, the report states that Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election was illegal and occurred “in sweeping and systematic fashion” but was welcomed by the Trump campaign as it expected to benefit from such efforts. It also identifies links between Trump campaign officials and individuals with ties to the Russian government, about which several persons connected to the campaign made false statements and obstructed investigations. Mueller later stated that his investigation's conclusion on Russian interference “deserves the attention of every American”.

Obama Administration Scandals: Robert Mueller delivers report on the Russian government's influence in the 2016 United States presidential election of Donald Trump on March 22, 2019

Volume II of the report addresses obstruction of justice. The investigation intentionally took an approach that could not result in a judgment that Trump committed a crime, abiding by an Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) opinion that a sitting president is immune from criminal prosecution, fearing that charges would affect Trump's governing and preempt impeachment and feeling that it would be unfair to accuse Trump of a crime without charges or a trial.

As such, the investigation “does not conclude that the President committed a crime”; however, “it also does not exonerate him”, with investigators not confident of Trump's innocence. The report describes ten episodes where Trump may have obstructed justice while president and one before he was elected, noting that he privately tried to “control the investigation”. The report further states that Congress can decide whether Trump obstructed justice and take action accordingly, referencing impeachment.

Solstice vs. Equinox: What’s the Difference? Mr. Answer Man Please Tell Us: Solstice vs. Equinox: What’s the Difference?

March 20, 2021 is the first of two annual equinoxes. For the Northern Hemisphere, it’ll be the vernal equinox marking the first day of spring - while the Southern Hemisphere will welcome fall with the autumnal equinox.

Equinox isn’t just the technical term for a season change. The word derives from the Latin for equal night, which offers a clue about what actually happens during an equinox: daylight hours are roughly equal to darkness hours. Since the Earth rotates on an axis tilted at about 23.5 degrees, the North Pole is usually angled either slightly toward or slightly away from the sun.

If it’s angled toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere experiences longer days than nights; if it’s angled away from the sun, nights outlast days.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite occurs. But twice a year, neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun, so they both experience about 12 hours of night and 12 hours of daylight. At this point - the equinox - the sun appears directly overhead along the Equator.

Solstice vs. Equinox: What’s the Difference?

Solstices, on the other hand, happen when the poles are at their farthest and nearest points from the sun.

During the winter solstice in late December, the North Pole is angled farthest away, and the Northern Hemisphere experiences the longest night of the year.

The sun will be right above the Tropic of Capricorn, the southernmost circle of latitude that the sun hits head-on.

Encyclopedia Britannica explains, the process is flipped for the summer solstice in late June.

The sun is directly above its northernmost circle of latitude - the Tropic of Cancer - because the North Pole is tilted toward the sun, so the Northern Hemisphere gets more daylight hours than any other time of the year.

The Southern Hemisphere, the South Pole is tilted away from the sun, so the Southern Hemisphere is sleeping through its longest night.

Where Did That Saying Come From

Where Did That Saying Come From?

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Clutch at straws”

Clutch at straws:

Meaning: Try any route to get out of a desperate situation, no matter how unlikely it is to succeed.

History: It is only since the mid-19th century that we have been clutching at straws. Even more recently, the 'grasp at straws' version has become commonplace, especially in the USA. Prior to that, desperate people would 'catch at a straw'.

That usage of 'catch' was commonly used in medieval England, by which was meant 'obtain/achieve'; for example, John Wycliffe used it in his 1382 translation of the Bible into English, in 1 Timothy 6:12:

“Stryve thou a good strif of feith, catche everlastyng lyf.”

By the 17th century, in the King James Version, this had migrated to:

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life.”

Our present day ambitions are more prosaic and we only use that sense of 'catch' now to catch trains, buses and, occasionally, colds.

A straw was chosen as the height of futility as a means of rescue. Being, as it was, a flimsy and virtually valueless waste product, it was often used as a synonym for the most unimportant and trifling of objects. 'Don't give/care a straw' was an indication of indifference, a 'man of straw' was an insubstantial adversary, and to 'condemn someone to straw' was to declare them ready for the madhouse.

'To clutch at straws' is now used as a figurative phrase, to describe any desperate situation. When the expression was coined it specifically referred to drowning. The notion of a drowning man anxiously seeking 'any port in a storm' was first expressed by Sir Thomas More, in A Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation, 1534:

“A man in peril of drowning catchest whatsoever cometh next to hand... be it never so simple a stick.”.

More used the imagery on several occasions, but didn't mention straw in any of them. The 'catch at a straw' version of the proverb is first recorded in the English cleric John Prime's Fruitful and Brief Discourse, 1583:

“We do not as men redie to be drowned, catch at euery straw.”

The metaphor expresses futility rather well. Straws do float, but a drowning man would have to be pretty much out of other ideas if he put any reliance on it bearing his weight.

Moving on to the 19th century, 'catch' has fallen from favour and we find an early mention of the current 'clutch at straws' version in The New-York Mirror, 1832:

“.. as drowning men clutch at straws.”

On to the 21st century and you no longer need to be drowning or desperate to clutch at straws - straw clutch bags have become fashion items.

Sly fox steals 100 shoes in Berlin, and he's not the first

Sly fox steals 100 shoes in Berlin, and he's not the first

“Why did the fox steal my shoes?” sounds like the start of a brain-teasing riddle or an annoyingly viral song. But for people in Berlin, it was an existential question spurred by the knowledge that a local fox was the culprit behind a string of shoe thefts.

About two weeks ago, Christian Meyer, a resident of Berlin's Zehlendorf neighborhood, noticed that one of his new and expensive running shoes had disappeared from his porch, and he decided to investigate the theft, German news site Tagesspiegel reported.

Meyer quickly learned that he was not the thief's only victim, and a tip helped him catch the fox bandit red-handed (or red-pawed) with two blue flip-flops in its mouth, according to Tagesspiegel. Days later, Meyer spotted the fox again; he followed it into a thicket, where Meyer crawled around for close to an hour. There, he discovered the fox's secret stash of more than 100 shoes, “most of them just gnawed on a little”, Tagesspiegel reported.

Meyer captured a photo of the thieving fox and its ill-gotten stash, which Tagesspiegel editor Felix Hackenbruch shared on Twitter. The shoe pile contained sneakers, clogs, sandals and slippers in a range of colors, shapes and sizes, though the most numerous shoes by far were Crocs.

Sly fox steals 100 shoes in Berlin, and he's not the first

Still unknown: Why the fox stole the shoes, and why this particular canid had a thing for Crocs. But this isn't the first time that an urban fox has demonstrated a seeming shoe fetish. In August 2019, a fox in Melbourne, Australia, repeatedly visited a woman's porch and stole three boots over the course of a week; the woman captured the thief's antics on security camera footage, which she posted on YouTube.

A pair of foxes in Kyoto, Japan, pilfered more than 40 pairs of sandals in 2018 before the duo was apprehended in a stakeout involving five police officers, The Guardian reported that year. In 2009, in the small town of Foehren in western Germany, a female fox stole about 110 to 120 shoes in just one night, presumably “for her cubs to play with”, according to Reuters. In 2013, a writer described waking up one morning in his London home to find that a fox had placed seven shoes in the middle of his lawn, “ranging in size from that of a toddler to an adult trainer.”

“When Will I Be Loved” - The Everly Brothers 1960

“When Will I Be Loved” video - The Everly Brothers
Album: “The Fabulous Style Of The Everly Brothers”
Released 1960 video

One of their classic songs, this tune finds The Everly Brothers fed up with the constant heartache that leaves them wondering, “When will I be loved?video

The Everly Brothers had already moved from Cadence Records to Warner Bros. when their former label issued this as a single in 1960. Hoping to shift from their signature rockabilly style to mainstream pop-rock, they were already achieving their goal as the pop-oriented “Cathy's Clownvideo climbed to #1.

The release of “When will I be loved?video was not only a throwback to their old sound, but it also threatened to derail their success by splitting airplay among their other tunes. But the public couldn't get enough of the Everlys and they notched four Top 10 hits that year, including the #8 entry “When Will I Be Loved”.

According to Rolling Stone, Phil Everly wrote this in his car, parked outside an A&W root beer stand. He took inspiration from his on-again, off-again romance with Jackie Ertel-Bleyer, the stepdaughter of Cadence Records founder, Archie Bleyer. Phil and Jackie got married in 1963 and divorced in 1972.

Linda Ronstadt video had even greater success when she released this as the second single from her 1974 album, “Heart Like A Wheel”. Aside from peaking at #2 on the Hot 100, it became her first #1 hit on the Country chart.

Several other artists have recorded this, including John Denver, Tanya Tucker, Gram Parsons, Rosemary Clooney, Manfred Mann, and The Little River Band, while Dolly Parton video frequently included it in her live repertoire. John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen video also recorded it as a duet for Fogerty's 2009 album, The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again.

Green Day singer _ sang this with Miranda Lambert at the 2014 Grammy Awards in honor of Phil Everly, who died of lung disease earlier that year on January 3, 2014.

Joke of the Day

“Scared Sleeping”

Shakey went to a psychiatrist. “Doc”, he said, “I've got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there's somebody under it. I get under the bed, I think there's somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. “you gotta help me, I'm going crazy!”"

“Just put yourself in my hands for two years”, said the Shrink. “Come to me three times a week, and I'll cure your fears.”

“How much do you charge?”, asks Shakey.

“A hundred dollars per visit.” replies the Shrink.

“I'll sleep on it”, said Shakey.

Six months later the doctor met Shakey on the street.

“Why didn't you ever come to see me again?” asked the Psychiatrist.

“For a hundred buck's a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars.”

“Is that so! How?” asks the Shrink.

“He told me to cut the legs off the bed!” replies Shakey.
