The Ides of March - Assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BC

The Ides of March - Assassination of Julius Caesar: On this day Julius Caesar, dictator of Rome, is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house by 60 conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. The day later become known as the “Ides of March”.

Caesar, born into the Julii, an ancient but not particularly distinguished Roman aristocratic family, began his political career in 78 B.C. as a prosecutor for the anti-patrician Popular Party. He won influence in the party for his reformist ideas and oratorical skills, and aided Roman imperial efforts by raising a private army to combat the king of Pontus in 74 B.C. He was an ally of Pompey, the recognized head of the Popular Party, and essentially took over this position after Pompey left Rome in 67 B.C. to become commander of Roman forces in the east.

In 63 B.C., Caesar was elected pontifex maximus, or “high priest”, allegedly by heavy bribes. Two years later, he was made governor of Farther Spain and in 60 B.C. returned to Rome, ambitious for the office of consul. The consulship, essentially the highest office in the Roman Republic, was shared by two politicians on an annual basis. Consuls commanded the army, presided over the Senate and executed its decrees, and represented the state in foreign affairs. Caesar formed a political alliance–the so-called First Triumvirate–with Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus, the wealthiest man in Rome, and in 59 B.C. was elected consul. Although generally opposed by the majority of the Roman Senate, Caesar’s land reforms won him popularity with many Romans.

The Ides of March - Assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BC

In 58 B.C., Caesar was given four Roman legions in Cisalpine Gaul and Illyricum, and during the next decade demonstrated brilliant military talents as he expanded the Roman Empire and his reputation. Among other achievements, Caesar conquered all of Gaul, made the first Roman inroads into Britain, and won devoted supporters in his legions. However, his successes also aroused Pompey’s jealousy, leading to the collapse of their political alliance in 53 B.C.

The Roman Senate supported Pompey and asked Caesar to give up his army, which he refused to do. In January 49 B.C., Caesar led his legions across the Rubicon River from Cisalpine Gaul to Italy, thus declaring war against Pompey and his forces. Caesar made early gains in the subsequent civil war, defeating Pompey’s army in Italy and Spain, but was later forced into retreat in Greece. In August 48 B.C., with Pompey in pursuit, Caesar paused near Pharsalus, setting up camp at a strategic location.

When Pompey’s senatorial forces fell upon Caesar’s smaller army, they were entirely routed, and Pompey fled to Egypt, where he was assassinated by an officer of the Egyptian king.

Caesar was subsequently appointed Roman consul and dictator, but before settling in Rome he traveled around the empire for several years and consolidated his rule. In 45 B.C., he returned to Rome and was made dictator for life. As sole Roman ruler, Caesar launched ambitious programs of reform within the empire. The most lasting of these was his establishment of the Julian calendar, which, with the exception of a slight modification and adjustment in the 16th century, remains in use today. He also planned new imperial expansions in central Europe and to the east.

In the midst of these vast designs, he was assassinated on March 15, 44 B.C., by a group of conspirators who believed that his death would lead to the restoration of the Roman Republic. However, the result of the “Ides of March” was to plunge Rome into a fresh round of civil wars, out of which Octavian, Caesar’s grand-nephew, would emerge as Augustus, the first Roman emperor, destroying the republic forever.

What Cat's Body Language Is Saying Mr. Answer Man Please Tell Us: What Cat's Body Language Is Saying

Cats use a variety of signals (body postures, facial expressions, and vocalizations) to convey their message and avoid unwelcome confrontations.

By learning how to decipher these feline postures, you can deepen the bonds of affection with your cats as well as prevent misunderstandings and potential aggression.

But for many of us, cat lingo feels like a foreign language, difficult to understand and still harder to decipher. Here, animal behaviorists help us interpret kitty’s cues and vocalizations.

1. Tummy Display

Feline body language is more nuanced than that of dogs, says Karen Sueda, DVM, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. “Part of the problem arises when people take their knowledge of dogs and apply it to cats”, says Sueda.

Have you ever wondered, for example, why your cat’s seemingly flirtatious behavior of rolling over to expose its belly may be met with overt aggression when you try to stroke it?

When your cat is content and relaxed, she may stretch out and roll over. But in other situations, when a cat feels cornered and cannot escape, this pose - followed by fully extended claws and sharp teeth - may be highly defensive, indicating that she is prepared to fight, says Pam Johnson-Bennett, a Certified Animal Behavior Consultant in Nashville, Tenn.

As with other feline-human interactions, it is important to learn what your cat prefers

2. The Fluttering Blink

When a cat greets another cat or a person with slow, languid blinks, it's communicating affection. When a cat greets another cat or a person with slow, languid blinks, it's communicating affection.

Why? Because in the feline world, closing one’s eyes in the presence of another is the ultimate sign of trust.

By blinking slowly at your cat, you are communicating that you are aware of its presence and pose no threat. So the next time your cat blinks at you, try returning the gesture.

What Cat's Body Language Is Saying

3. Classic Halloween Pose

One of the most accurate barometers of a cat’s mood is its tail.

When held high, it communicates confidence. Curled around another cat’s tail or human legs, it signals friendliness. And tucked below or between the legs, it signals insecurity or anxiousness.

The upright bottle-brush tail is an unequivocal sign that your cat is feeling threatened. And when combined with the arched back, upright hair along the spine, and unsheathed claws, the stance is a dead giveaway that you should back off, Sueda says.

4. The Direct Stare

Although people can use direct eye contact to show affection, most cats find it threatening. That's why in social settings, a cat usually gravitates toward the one person in the room who is trying to ignore it.

The more fearful a cat becomes, the wider its pupils expand, says Myrna Milani, DVM, an animal behaviorist at Tipping Point Animal Behavior Consulting Services in Charlestown, N.H.

When dilated, the pupils take in as much visual information as possible. This bug-eyed, saucer look signals that a cat is very frightened and wants to retreat.

In an aroused or angry cat, the pupils may become narrowed or constricted to focus more effectively on detail. But cats’ eyes also respond to ambient lighting, Sueda says, so it's important to observe the body language as a whole and not single out any one element.

Once a cat realizes that he is being watched, he may stop what he is doing and assess the situation.

What Cat's Body Language Is Saying

5. I'm Going to Get You

Even the most mild-mannered cat may retaliate if feeling threatened or aroused by too much play or petting. "Cats are stimulus-driven predators by nature," Milani says.

So when they see something move (whether a mouse, cat toy, or human hand), they are hardwired to pursue it.

Closer and closer, they inch forward until they reach arousal threshold. Then they pounce and kill.

If the prey happens to be your hand, the wisest thing to do, Milani says, is to freeze. That stop-action will interrupt this inbred stalking pattern.

When you see these telltale warning signs: dilated pupils, low twitching tail, and flattened ears, your cat is telling you, in the only way it can, to back off.

“That is not a time to get in its face and do ‘the nice kitty’ thing”, Milani says. “And don’t add to the problem by stroking it, especially if the cat is in defensive mode.”

6. Audio Cues

Cats may have adapted their meows to manipulate people in order to get their needs met.

Cats don’t do much meowing to other cats”, says Sueda, calling meows “an attention-getting device” to express greetings, approval, demands for food, and more.

Learn the nuances of your cat’s vocabulary so you can detect the difference between a plea for dinner and an urgent cry for help. For instance:

• Purring usually signals contentment and may also be a comfort-seeking behavior when the cat is recovering from illness or close to death.

• High-pitched gurgling or chatting indicates friendliness.

• Growling, hissing, or spitting are emphatic warnings to stay away - at least until the cat has calmed down.

• Caterwauling is a very loud, guttural sound that cats (especially males that have not been neutered) make when threatened by other cats. This sound is common in deaf cats.

Still, every cat is unique.

“I always tell clients that nobody knows your cat better than you do”, Milani says.

Where Did That Saying Come From

Where Did That Saying Come From?

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater”

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater:

Meaning: Don't discard something valuable along with something undesirable.

History: Proverbs are intended to pass on popular wisdom and are frequently expressed as warnings - 'don't count your chickens', 'don't look a gift horse in the mouth' and so on.

To that list of don'ts we can add the odd-sounding 'don't throw the baby out with the bathwater'. Sadly, any discussion of the origin of this proverb has to refer to the nonsensical but apparently immortal email that circulates the Internet 'Life in the 1500s' (or 1600s, as some variants have it).

One of the claims in one version of that mail is that "in medieval times" people shared scarce bathwater and by the time that the baby was bathed the water was so murky that the baby was in danger of being thrown out unseen. Complete twaddle, of course.

What is unusual about this phrase is that, quite by chance, the mischievous author of 'Life in the 1500s' hit on a correct date - the proverb did originate in the 1500s. 'Throw the baby out with the bathwater' is a German proverb and the earliest printed reference to it, in Thomas Murner’s satirical work Narrenbeschwörung (Appeal to Fools), dates from 1512.

Murner wrote in German of course, but we hardly need a translator as he was good enough to include a woodcut illustrating the proverb. The expression was part of everyday German language from then onward (as 'Schüttet das Kind mit dem Bade aus') but didn't emerge in English until the 19th century. The Scottish philosopher and German scholar Thomas Carlyle was well acquainted with German proverbs and translated it in an essay denouncing slavery entitled Occasional Discourse on the N*gger Question (written in 1849 and published in 1853):

And if true, it is important for us, in reference to this Negro Question and some others. The Germans say, “You must empty-out the bathing-tub, but not the baby along with it.” Fling-out your dirty water with all zeal, and set it careering down the kennels; but try if you can to keep the little child!

Despite going against the establishment view on slavery that was held in his day, Carlyle wasn't quite the freedom fighter we might imagine. His analogy compared the dirty bathwater to slavery (to be discarded) and the 'little child' to the useful service provided by the slave (to be kept). He suggested that:

“the Black gentleman is born to be a servant and is useful in God's creation only as a servant”. What he in fact proposed was that servants should be hired for life and given payment, not kept as slaves.

The proverb, in the form of 'do not empty out the baby with the bath water', was in general use in English from the late 19th century onward.

Other 'Don't...' proverbs:

Don't cast your pearls before swine

Don't change horses in midstream

Don't count your chickens before they are hatched

Don't get mad, get even

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face

Don't keep a dog and bark yourself

Don't let the cat out of the bag

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

Don't put the cart before the horse

Don't shut the stable door after the horse has bolted

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater

Don't throw good money after bad

Don't try to teach your Grandma to suck eggs

Don't upset the apple-cart

Marine microorganisms: How to survive below the seafloor'

Marine microorganisms: How to survive below the seafloor

Source: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

Summary:Foraminifera, an ancient and ecologically highly successful group of marine organisms, are found on and below the seafloor. Geobiologists report that several species not only survive, but thrive, in these oxygen-free sediments.

Foraminifera are unicellular marine organisms that are found on and within seafloor sediments. Most species construct porous mineralized shells and capture prey by extending cytoplasmic filaments though these pores. The group is highly species rich, and their preserved fossilized remains show that they were already present in the oceans at the beginning of the Cambrian Era, 560 million years ago. Their shells have considerable fossilization potential, which explains why they serve as index fossils for the dating of a number of geological eras.

Moreover, foraminifera are of great ecological significance - owing to their contributions to carbon and nitrate cycles, for instance - and their shells play an important role in the reconstruction of ancient climates. However, despite their well-established status as proxies for environmental conditions, relatively little is known about the biology of contemporary species of foraminifera. LMU geobiologists led by Professor William Orsi of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the GeoBio Center at LMU, in cooperation with Raphaël Morard and Michal Kucera (Bremen University), have now investigated their metabolism at the molecular level, and found that some species of foraminifera can survive -- and indeed thrive - in oxygen-free (anoxic) habitats that would be deadly for other eukaryotes. The results of the new study appear in The ISME Journal.

Marine microorganisms: How to survive below the seafloor

Foraminifera have been previously found in oxygen-poor and even anoxic marine sediments. To learn more about the adaptations that enable them to survive in this inhospitable environment, Orsi and his team examined species sampled from a sediment core recovered from the seafloor off the coast of Namibia. Much of the sediment in this core was anoxic and rich in the toxic gas hydrogen sulfide. Nevertheless, the team found large numbers of Foraminifera at these levels, where they had more than 10 times higher activity compared to the shallower sections with higher levels of oxygen.

“Up to now, marine biologists have assumed that, under such conditions, Foraminifera manage to survive on the seafloor and die when they are buried beneath it”, says Orsi. “Our results, on the other hand, surprisingly demonstrate that some species of Foraminifera are metabolically more active in anoxic sediments.”

In other words, it looks as if these organisms are just not eking out a living in these habitats, they appear to be very well adapted to the challenging conditions. Moreover, incubation experiments confirmed their preference for anoxic environments, whereby the activity of the Foraminifera increased up to 40 times in anoxic conditions.

Orsi and his colleagues went on to study the metabolic pathways employed by these foraminiferan species by analyzing the messenger RNAs (mRNAs) found in sediment samples. mRNAs are copied from genomic DNA, and encode the instructions for the synthesis of the proteins required for cell function. They therefore allow one to identify the set of genes that are active in the local cell population, and the spectrum of biochemical activities required for cellular metabolism in a given environment. In this case, the analyses revealed that foraminifera make use of a variety of metabolic pathways - for the fermentation of sugars and amino acids, for instance.

In addition, they show that, in addition to capturing and digesting prey, foraminifera in the anoxic zones can exploit soluble organic material as a source of carbon and energy. “Presumably, foraminifera play an important and hitherto overlooked role in anaerobic nutrient cycles“, says Orsi. This ability to thrive in such otherwise inhospitable anoxic environments with high levels of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas could be part of the explanation for their ecological success. After all, the group has managed to avoid a number of mass extermination events over the past 500 million years - many of which were associated with a marked reduction in the availability of oxygen and accumulation of toxic hydrogen sulfide that was responsible for killing off numerous now extinct animal species.

Warner Bros. launched in 1958 and was struggling - their only big hit was a novelty song by Edward Byrnes and Connie Stevens called “Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)video, which hit #4 in 1959.

Warner Bros. paid the Everlys a reported $1 million (it was likely less) and expected a hit, so the pressure was on. The duo delivered with “Cathy's Clownvideo. Recorded on March 18, it was released in early April and made #1 in the U.S. on May 23, holding the top spot for five weeks.

Recorded in Nashville with Wesley Rose producing, the musicians on this track were:

Floyd Chance - bass

Buddy Harman - drums

Floyd Cramer - piano

There was only one drummer on this track, but he was augmented by a tape loop that engineer Bill Porter used to add additional beats. This being 1960, it was done on the fly, with Porter switching to the loop when he wanted it to come in.

This was the first single ever released on the Warner Bros. label in the United Kingdom, where it got the catalog number WB-1.

This was the first single to simultaneously top the UK and U.S. charts.

This was added to the Library of Congress National Song Registry in 2013.

The writer credits on this song went to both Don and Phil Everly until 1980, when a deal was made to make Don the solo composer.

Reba McEntire had a Country #1 hit 1989 with her version of “Cathy's Clownvideo, in which she changed the lyrics from first person to third person:

She don't want your lovin' anymore

She don't want your kisses, that's for sure

Why do you let them put you down

And let 'em call you Cathy's Clown?

Joke of the Day

Joke of the Day

“Half a Head of Lettuce”

A man in the Florida supermarket tries to buy half a head of lettuce.

The very young produce assistant tells him that they sell only whole heads of lettuce.

The man persists and asks to see the manager.

The boy says he'll ask his manager about it.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, “Some asshole wants to buy half a head of lettuce.”

As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, “And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.”

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.

Later the manager said to the boy, “I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?”

“Canada, sir”, the boy replied.

“Well, why did you leave Canada?” the manager asked.

The boy said, “Sir, there's nothing but whores and hockey players up there.”

“Really?” said the manager. “My wife is from Canada.”

“No Kidding?” replied the boy. “Who'd she play for?”
