February Revolution begins, leading to the end of czarist rule in Russia on March 08, 1917

February Revolution begins, leading to the end of czarist rule in Russia: In Russia, the February Revolution (known as such because of Russia’s use of the Julian calendar) begins when riots and strikes over the scarcity of food erupt in Petrograd. One week later, centuries of czarist rule in Russia ended with the abdication of Nicholas II, and Russia took a dramatic step closer toward communist revolution.

By 1917, most Russians had lost faith in the leadership ability of the czarist regime. Government corruption was rampant, the Russian economy remained backward, and Nicholas repeatedly dissolved the Duma, the Russian parliament established after the Revolution of 1905, when it opposed his will. However, the immediate cause of the February Revolution - the first phase of the Russian Revolution of 1917 - was Russia’s disastrous involvement in World War I. Militarily, imperial Russia was no match for industrialized Germany, and Russian casualties were greater than those sustained by any nation in any previous war. Meanwhile, the economy was hopelessly disrupted by the costly war effort, and moderates joined Russian radical elements in calling for the overthrow of the czar.

On March 8, 1917, demonstrators clamoring for bread took to the streets in the Russian capital of Petrograd (now known as St. Petersburg). Supported by 90,000 men and women on strike, the protesters clashed with police but refused to leave the streets. On March 10, the strike spread among all of Petrograd’s workers, and irate mobs of workers destroyed police stations. Several factories elected deputies to the Petrograd Soviet, or “council,” of workers’ committees, following the model devised during the Revolution of 1905.

February Revolution begins, leading to the end of czarist rule in Russia on March 08, 1917

On March 11, the troops of the Petrograd army garrison were called out to quell the uprising. In some encounters, regiments opened fire, killing demonstrators, but the protesters kept to the streets, and the troops began to waver. That day, Nicholas again dissolved the Duma. On March 12, the revolution triumphed when regiment after regiment of the Petrograd garrison defected to the cause of the demonstrators. The soldiers, some 150,000 men, subsequently formed committees that elected deputies to the Petrograd Soviet.

The imperial government was forced to resign, and the Duma formed a provisional government that peacefully vied with the Petrograd Soviet for control of the revolution. On March 14, the Petrograd Soviet issued “Order No. 1,” which instructed Russian soldiers and sailors to obey only those orders that did not conflict with the directives of the Soviet. The next day, March 15, Czar Nicholas II abdicated the throne in favor of his brother Michael, whose refusal of the crown brought an end to the czarist autocracy.

The new provincial government, tolerated by the Petrograd Soviet, hoped to salvage the Russian war effort while ending the food shortage and many other domestic crises. It would prove a daunting task. Meanwhile, Vladimir Lenin, leader of the Bolshevik revolutionary party, left his exile in Switzerland and crossed German enemy lines to return home and take control of the Russian Revolution.

Signal Bridge / Flight Deck / FOD / Vultures Row

The Old Salt’s Corner

Signal Bridge / Flight Deck / FOD / Vultures Row

All navy ships have a signal bridge. To the intelligence officer or specialist, this is the area where sighting teams are called to photograph items of interest such as foreign warships, merchantmen, or aircraft. If you are assigned to the sighting team, learn the quickest route to the Signal Bridge in advance.

If assigned to a carrier, the flight deck offers a unique source of fascination and entertainment for those who have never witnessed flight operations. Personnel who work on the flight deck receive monthly hazardous duty pay, which should be some indication of how dangerous a job it is. Going up on the flight deck or catwalks during flight operations is prohibited regardless of rank. An easy, and unobtrusive, way to watch flight operations is via the Pilot’s Landing Aid Television (PLAT) system. There are several (usually four to five) television cameras that cover the entire flight deck. Continuous views of landings and launches can be seen on any 9TV (SCCTV) or 14TV (ship’s entertainment TV system) monitor around the ship.

If you want to watch flight operations other than on the PLAT system, an excellent place to do so is "Vulture’s Row" located on the island superstructure around the 09 or 010 level. It is likely that you will receive a tour of the flight deck and "Vulture’s Row" when reporting aboard with your CVIC guide. Initially, do not visit either of these areas unless you have received a tour first. Vulture’s Row offers an unobstructed view of both aircraft launches and recoveries. Picture taking is allowed but remember that using a flash at night is strictly prohibited. While perched on Vulture’s Row, be sure to remove your cover and all the small items from your shirt pockets and remember to wear some form of ear protection!

As a member of the CVIC team, you may be required to report to Vulture’s Row or the Signal Bridge, as part of the sighting team (also known as the "Snoopy" or "Big Eyes" teams). As mentioned above, the sighting team is called away to photograph and identify foreign military or commercial ships of interest as well as aircraft coming into contact with the carrier battlegroup. Exposed film is then developed by the Photo Lab and returned to the CVIC team for analysis.

An excellent opportunity to get up on the flight deck to remind yourself there really is a sun is during FOD walk-downs. FOD is the acronym for Foreign Object Damage, the small bits and pieces of debris, nuts, bolts, wire clippings, etc. that can get sucked into a jet engine and cause thousands of dollars damage or possibly even cause a plane to crash. FOD walk-downs are usually held before the start of each major flight evolution.

Why Does Your Dog Follows You Everywhere? Mr. Answer Man Please Tell Us:Why Does Your Dog Follows You Everywhere?

The answer has to do with your dog’s animal instinct and pack mentality. Canine companions that exhibit this type of behavior are often referred to as “Velcro dogs” because of their desire to be attached to your side. “Dogs are pack animals, and we are their pack”, says Sally Morgan, an author and holistic physical therapist for pets and people.

Because dogs respond to their owners’ behavior, it’s important to examine your relationship with your canine. For example, if your dog sleeps in your bed, you might be creating a dependency and reinforcing his need to be close to you at all times. In households consisting of multiple people, there’s a good chance your dog will become fixated on one person in particular. Sometimes it’s the primary caregiver who provides food and walks or the fun-time human who plays tug of war, a game of catch, or hands out endless amounts of treats.

Why Does Your Dog Follows You Everywhere?

Most experts agree on a few different reasons why some dogs are clingy around their owners. One is their pack mentality. Dogs may have been domesticated thousands of years ago, but they still consider themselves to be part of a group like their wild ancestors. When there are no other dogs around, their human family becomes their pack. According to Reader's Digest, this genetic instinct is also what motivates dogs to watch you closely and seek out your physical touch.

A second reason for the behavior has to do with the bond between you and your pet. As veterinarian Dr. Rachel Barrack told the American Kennel Club, puppies as old as 6 months can imprint on their human owners like they would their own mothers. Even older dogs will bond with the humans in their lives who show them care and affection. In these cases, a dog will shadow its owner because it sees them as an object of trust and security.

A third possible explanation for why your dog follows you has more to do with your treatment of them than their natural instincts. A popular training tactic is positive reinforcement - i.e. rewarding a dog with treats, pets, and praise when they perform positive behaviors. The point is to help your dog associate good behaviors with rewards, but after a while, they may start to associate your presence with rewards as well. That means if your dog is following you, they may be looking for treats or attention.

Indeed, the science behind the companionship between humans and dogs is varied and vast. In fact,

“Research has confirmed that … the modern dog is actually better at understanding humans than even our most closely related primates.”

Add some contemporary details and those youngsters are mesmerized, as they should be. Should always begin with “No shit, this really happened”, or "This is a no shitter.”

2) Reminiscence among older sailors, not necessarily with embellishment but often times a mutual exaggeration and perhaps colorful language: “Remember the time we were in the Gulf of Thailand for that ...?” “Yeah that was fucking crazy; we came damn near...”

Where Did That Saying Come From

Where Did That Saying Come From?

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Don't throw good money after bad”

Don't throw good money after bad:

Meaning: You 'throw good money after bad' when, following the loss of some money, you to incur a further loss in trying to make good.

History: When I heard 'throw good money after bad' in a radio play recently I wondered about the meanings of 'good money' and 'bad money'. In our 21st century culture surely any money is as good as any other?

I guessed that the expression dated from the days when the coinage in England (and this phrase is English in origin) was corrupted by unscrupulous people clipping or filing metal from the edges. Some coins became so degraded as to become worthless and could easily have been labelled as 'bad money'.

As it turns out my guess was off the mark. The expression 'good money after bad' wasn't a comparison between newly minted and clipped coins but a reference to money lost in some venture, that is, the 'bad money', and money that one might use to make up the loss - the 'good money'.

Examples of throwing good money after bad might be betting on one big long-odds win on the horses after losing most of one's money in previous races, or spending money on an old banger of a car that had had work done on it but is still unroadworthy.

In proverbial form 'don't throw good money after bad' is advice that, after losing your money on a poor investment, you should cut your losses and keep your remaining money safe in your pocket.

The first example that I can find in print is in the American newspaper The Maryland Gazette, January 1765 in a letter between two Indian gentlemen, one of whom advises the other not to attempt to recover money from someone who had defaulted on a loan:

“[If you don't chase the money] ... thou wilt not run the hazard of fresher losses, by throwing good money after bad.”

The above citation notwithstanding, the phrase originated in England in the 18th century. All of the other early examples in print come from English sources and the Indian author of the letter above was referred to as a Gentoo, that is one of the ruling class, and, being English speaking, he was probably educated in England.

Other 'Don't...' proverbs:

Don't cast your pearls before swine

Don't change horses in midstream

Don't count your chickens before they are hatched

Don't get mad, get even

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face

Don't keep a dog and bark yourself

Don't let the cat out of the bag

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

Don't put the cart before the horse

Don't shut the stable door after the horse has bolted

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater

Don't throw good money after bad

Don't try to teach your Grandma to suck eggs

Don't upset the apple-cart

How old is your dog in human years? New method better than 'multiply by 7'

How old is your dog in human years? New method better than ‘multiply by 7’

Source: Cell Press

Summary: How old is your tail-wagging bundle of joy in human years? According to the well-known ‘rule of paw’,' one dog year is the equivalent of 7 years. Now scientists say it's wrong. Dogs are much older than we think, and researchers devised a more accurate formula to calculate a dog's age based on the chemical changes in the DNA as organisms grow old.

Dogs share the same environment as their owners and receive almost the same standard of health care as humans, providing a unique opportunity for scientists to understand aging across species. Like humans, dogs follow similar developmental trajectories that lead them to grey and become more susceptible to age-related diseases over time. However, how they age on a molecular level is more complicated - aging rapidly at first and slowing down later in life.

“In terms of how physiologically mature a 1-year-old dog is, a 9-month-old dog can have puppies. Right away, you know that if you do the math, you don't just times seven”, says senior author Trey Ideker (@TreyIdeker) of the University of California, San Diego. “What's surprising is exactly how old that one-year-old dog is - it's like a 30-year old human.”

How old is your dog in human years? New method better than ‘multiply by 7’

Human and dog DNA, which codes who we are, doesn't change much throughout the course of life, but chemical marks on the DNA, called methylation marks, do. Ideker considers these marks like wrinkles in the genome:

“I tend to think of it very much like when you look at someone's face and guess their age based on their wrinkles, gray hair, and other features”, he says. “These are just similar kinds of features on the molecular level.”

The researchers studied 104 Labrador retrievers spanning from few-week-old puppies to 16-year-old dogs with the help of two canine experts, Danika Bannasch of the University of California, Davis, and Elaine Ostrander of the National Institutes of Health. They compared the changes in the methylation pattern to humans.

The comparison revealed a new formula that better matches the canine-human life stages: human age = 16 ln(dog age) + 31. Based on the new function, an 8-week-old dog is approximately the age of a 9-month-old baby, both being in the infant stage where puppies and babies develop teeth. The average 12-year lifespan of Labrador retrievers also corresponds to the worldwide life expectancy of humans, 70 years.

“I like to take my dogs on runs, and so I'm a little bit more sympathetic to the 6-year-old now”, says Ideker, who realized that his dog is pushing 60 according to the new calculation.

In both species, they found that the age-driven methylation largely happens in developmental genes that are hotly fired up to create body plans in utero and regulating childhood development. By the time one becomes an adult and stops growing,

you've largely shut off these genes, but they're still smoldering”, says Ideker. “If you look at the methylation marks on those developmental genes, they're still changing.”

“I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.”

The wife responded,

“Allow me to explain.

God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me.

God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!”
