United States President George Washington exercises first presidential veto on April 05, 1792

United States President George Washington exercises first presidential veto: On April 5, 1792 - George Washington's veto of a Congressional bill introduced a new plan for dividing seats in the House of Representatives that would have increased the amount of seats for northern states.

After consulting with his politically divided and contentious cabinet, Washington, who came from the southern state of Virginia, ultimately decided that the plan was unconstitutional because, in providing for additional representatives for some states, it would have introduced a number of representatives higher than that proscribed by the Constitution.

After a discussion with the president, Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter that votes for or against the bill were divided along perfectly geographical lines between the North and South. Jefferson observed that Washington feared that a veto would incorrectly portray him as biased toward the South.

In the end, Jefferson was able to convince the president to veto the bill on the grounds that it was unconstitutional and introduced principles that were liable to be abused in the future. Jefferson suggested apportionment instead be derived from arithmetical operation, about which no two men can ever possibly differ.

“Washington’s veto sent the bill back to Congress. Though representatives could have attempted to overrule the veto with a two-thirds vote, Congress instead threw out the original bill and instituted a new one that apportioned representatives at “the ratio of one for every thirty-three thousand persons in the respective States.”

Washington exercised his veto power only one other time during his two terms in office. In February 1797, the former commanding general of the Continental Army vetoed an act that would have reduced the number of cavalry units in the army.

Carrier Battlegroup (CVBG)

Modern carrier battlegroups (CVBGs) and Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs) incorporate a diverse mix of platforms to carry out their power projection missions.

The typical breakdown for a current carrier battlegroup includes one carrier (CV or CVN), two cruisers (CGs and/or CGNs), three destroyers (DDs and/or DDGs) or frigates (FFs and/or FFGs) and one auxiliary (AE, AOE, or AOR).

Some battlegroups also include a fast attack submarine (SSN) operating in a support role. The ultimate content of the battlegroup will depend on the specific mission of the Task Force.

Additionally, nuclear powered carriers (CVNs) are often coupled with the most up to date air warfare (AW) and undersea warfare (USW) platforms (surface or subsurface).

Nuclear cruisers normally will be attached to nuclear carriers.

The modern carrier battlegroup forms a potent power-projection platform. The embarked carrier air wing employs a diverse mix of offensive and defensive aircraft capable of carrying out intense and sustained combat operations against targets ashore and on the sea.

The assets of the battlegroup itself maintain sophisticated combat systems for conducting local combat actions in defense of the carrier.

Why Do Eggshells Sometimes Have Weird Bumps and Spots? Mr. Answer Man Please Tell Us: Why Do Eggshells Sometimes Have Weird Bumps and Spots?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, each American consumed an average of 279 eggs in 2019, making the protein-filled yolks and whites a staple of diets. Low in calories and high in healthy fats, the versatile egg has earned its place on tables.

Grabbing a whole egg from its container, however, can be a stressful proposition. While many eggs sport a smooth and unblemished shell, some rogue eggs present with raised bumps, discoloration, or even spots that materialize once the shell has been cracked.

Why do some eggs look aesthetically off? And are these aberrant eggs safe to consume?

USDA “grades” eggs

Grade AA eggs are top-shelf (or top-shell) eggs that have thick, firm yolks and whites and unbroken shells. Grade A eggs are essentially the same, though the whites don’t have to be as firm. Grade B eggs loosen the standards for both whites and yolks and the shell might show some staining. These eggs are usually directed toward liquid or dried egg products.

Grade AA or A eggs are no guarantee against discoloration. In addition, there’s no real difference in quality between brown eggs and white eggs. (Their color depends on whether brown-feathered or white-feathered chickens are laying them.)

Most Common Abnormality in an Egshell - Sark Brown Spots On Brown Eggs

Known as “speckled” eggs, these eggs have spots that are the result of an egg spinning too slowly as it emerges out of a hen’s oviduct, a tube-like organ that processes the yolk and adds the shell and membrane. Some hens - like Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans - are more likely to lay speckled eggs than others. There’s nothing wrong with these eggs and they’re perfectly safe to eat.

Bumps often show up as raised or textured on an eggshell.

They’re most often the result of debris in the oviduct as the shell is being formed. When that happens, calcium will be produced to enclose the debris in the shell. (Sometimes more calcium will be produced for no reason at all.) There’s also no concern here. Eggshell bumps don’t affect the egg itself.

Why Do Eggshells Sometimes Have Weird Bumps and Spots?

What you want to avoid in a freshly-cracked egg are black spots inside the eggshell. If you see them, it probably means a fungus or bacteria has taken root. It’s best to discard the egg.

Other variables like double yolks and cloudy egg whites are also generally no cause for concern. Some people may even notice a little blood in the yolk, which can appear as a dark brown speck. This is the result of a ruptured blood vessel at the time of ovulation. These eggs are also safe to eat.

The most important variable in egg safety isn’t the presence or absence of spots or bumps. It’s handling and cooking eggs properly. Store-bought eggs should be kept refrigerated and used within three weeks of purchase. Eggs should be cooked until yolks are firm. Hands and surfaces that have been in contact with raw eggs should be washed to reduce the risk of contracting Salmonella, a group of bacteria causing illness.

Otherwise, don't let appearances fool you. Most intact eggs are perfectly safe to eat.

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Early bird catches the worm”

Early bird catches the worm:

Meaning: Success comes to those who prepare well and put in effort.

History: This is first recorded in John Ray's A collection of English proverbs 1670, 1678:

“The early bird catcheth the worm.”

Clearly, the title of the work indicates that this was considered proverbial even in the 17th century.

Lightning killed 2 giraffes in South Africa: Were they doomed by their height?

Lightning killed 2 giraffes in South Africa: Were they doomed by their height?

Thousands of animals worldwide (not just giraffes) are injured by lightning each year.

Lightning recently killed two giraffes in South Africa; one of the giraffes - a 5-year-old female - had a fractured skull and a broken ossicone (giraffes' knoblike horns), indicating that she died after a lightning strike directly to the head.

The giraffes were found on March 2 after a thunderstorm in Rockwood, a private nature reserve located about 112 miles (180 kilometers) to the west of Kimberley, South Africa.

Ciska P. J. Scheijen, a student in the Department of Animal, Wildlife and Grassland Sciences at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, described the fatal event in the African Journal of Ecology, suggesting that the animals' height may have increased their risk for electrocution during the storm, turning them into living lightning rods.

However, no peer-reviewed studies have shown that giraffes are more prone to lightning strikes than other animals, Live Science reported in 2017, and Scheijen did not present any new data on the subject.

There are four ways that lightning strikes can kill an animal, according to Schiejen's paper. It can strike the animal directly or it can hit as a “side flash”, arcing into the animal's body after striking a nearby object. It can also be lethal through “touch potential”, when the electrical current jolts through an animal that is in direct contact with a lightning-struck object. Finally, lightning can also deliver a deadly current through “step potential”, which electrifies the animal through the ground.

Lightning killed 2 giraffes in South Africa: Were they doomed by their height?

The giraffes in South Africa died surrounded by bushes and grasses, but there were no trees nearby; an adult male giraffe stands about 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall, while females measure about 14 feet (4.3 m) tall; so the giraffes would easily have been the tallest targets in the area. The body of the second giraffe, a female about 4 years old, was found about 23 feet (7 m) from the giraffe with the cracked skull. There were no visible signs of injury on the younger giraffe, hinting that it received a lethal dose of electricity through the ground as its companion was directly struck, Scheijen reported.

“Both giraffes had a very strong ammonia-like smell”, Scheijen added. Researchers had previously mentioned a similar odor surrounding a lightning-struck giraffe, in a study published in 2014 in the journal Vulture News.

Thousands of animals are injured each year by lightning, according to a study published in 2012 in the International Journal of Biometeorology. And some animals are more vulnerable than others. Those with “a large separation between their front and back feet” are more likely to suffer significant lightning damage because their feet can act as points in a circuit that channel voltage, after lightning strikes the ground or a nearby object, according to the study.

Ground current electrocution is the most common cause of group death for animals during electrical storms. In one exceptional event in 2016, lightning killed 323 reindeer - including seven calves - through ground current, as the reindeer huddled close together during the storm.

In the case of the South African giraffes, Scheijen concluded that a direct lightning strike killed the older female, “while the other female, found some 7 meters [23 feet] away, died likely either from a side flash or step potential”, Scheijen reported.

“Given that lightning bolts tend to hit tall objects, especially in open areas, the height of giraffes may make them particularly vulnerable to fatal electrocution”, Scheijen said.

John Lennon wrote “Bad To Mevideo in 1963 when he was in Spain. Along with “I Call Your Namevideo, Lennon wrote it for Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas, who Brian Epstein had signed along with The Beatles.

Released with I Call Your Namevideo as the B-side, it was a huge hit, which Kramer followed up with a #1 UK cover of “Do You Want To Know A Secretvideo. (The Beatles version )

The Swedish singer and composer Peter Lemarc said 30 years after “Bad To Mevideo's release that he heard the melody sung by Lennon in a demo from may 1963.

“To hear Lennon sing it to an acoustic guitar, gave me shudders in the backbone” said Lemarc.

Bad To Mevideo is often overlooked in Beatles history. Although it's listed as a “Lennon-McCartney” song, Ian MacDonald didn't mention it in his 1995 book “Revolution In The Head”, nor did McCartney in his 1997 memoir Many Years From Now.

Billy J. Kramer recalled to the Daily Mail in December 2014:

John came to me on my 20th birthday when I was on tour with them and told me he'd written a song for me.”

“The next time I was recording at Abbey Road, he came and played it for me and we recorded it there and then. That was Bad to Me.”

Joke of the Day

Joke of the Day

“10th Birthday”

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.

The wife said, “You should do it because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee.”

The husband said, “You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.”

Wife replies,

“No, you should do it.

And besides,it is in the Bible...

That the man should do the coffee.”

Husband replies, “I can't believe that, show me.”

So she fetched the Bible, opened the New Testament and showed him that at the top of several pages, says:

“It does indeed say ‘HEBREWS’.”
