Columbia Space Shuttle mission ends in disaster on February 01, 2003

Columbia Space Shuttle mission ends in disaster: On this day February 01, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia breaks up while entering the atmosphere over Texas, killing all seven crew members on board.

The Columbia‘s 28th space mission, designated STS-107, was originally scheduled to launch on January 11, 2001, but was delayed numerous times for a variety of reasons over nearly two years. Columbia finally launched on January 16, 2003, with a crew of seven. Eighty seconds into the launch, a piece of foam insulation broke off from the shuttle’s propellant tank and hit the edge of the shuttle’s left wing.

Cameras focused on the launch sequence revealed the foam collision but engineers could not pinpoint the location and extent of the damage. Although similar incidents had occurred on three prior shuttle launches without causing critical damage, some engineers at the space agency believed that the damage to the wing could cause a catastrophic failure. Their concerns were not addressed in the two weeks that Columbia spent in orbit because NASA management believed that even if major damage had been caused, there was little that could be done to remedy the situation.

Columbia Space Shuttle mission ends in disaster on February 01, 2003

Columbia reentered the earth’s atmosphere on the morning of February 1. It wasn’t until 10 minutes later, at 8:53 a.m.–as the shuttle was 231,000 feet above the California coastline traveling at 23 times the speed of sound–that the first indications of trouble began. Because the heat-resistant tiles covering the left wing’s leading edge had been damaged or were missing, wind and heat entered the wing and blew it apart.

The first debris began falling to the ground in west Texas near Lubbock at 8:58 a.m. One minute later, the last communication from the crew was heard, and at 9 a.m. the shuttle disintegrated over northeast Texas, near Dallas. Residents in the area heard a loud boom and saw streaks of smoke in the sky. Debris and the remains of the crew were found in more than 2,000 locations across East Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. Making the tragedy even worse, two pilots aboard a search helicopter were killed in a crash while looking for debris. Strangely, worms that the crew had used in a study that were stored in a canister aboard the Columbia did survive.

In August 2003, an investigation board issued a report that revealed that it in fact would have been possible either for the Columbia crew to repair the damage to the wing or for the crew to be rescued from the shuttle. The Columbia could have stayed in orbit until February 15 and the already planned launch of the shuttle Atlantis could have been moved up as early as February 10, leaving a short window for repairing the wing or getting the crew off of the Columbia.

In the aftermath of the Columbia disaster, the space shuttle program was grounded until July 16, 2005, when the space shuttle Discovery was put into orbit.

“Tales of Legendary Ghost Ships”

Legend of the SS Valencia

Valencia, SS, the Wreck of (1906): On Monday, January 22, 1906, the coastal passenger liner SS Valencia, en route from San Francisco to Seattle with 108 passengers and 65 crew aboard, passed the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca in foul weather, and ran aground on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island. The ship was on a reef, trapped between sheer rock cliffs and pounding breakers. Uncharted rocks and fierce storms made it impossible for rescue vessels to approach from seaward. Scores of passengers drowned when their lifeboats were wrecked or capsized in the surf. Over the next 36 hours, terrified people huddled on the hurricane deck or clung to the rigging as huge waves slowly broke the ship apart. Finally, as rescuers watched, horrified and powerless, a huge wave swept the remaining passengers and crew into the sea. There were 37 survivors, but 136 persons perished in one of the most tragic maritime disasters in Pacific Northwest history.

The Vessel

The SS Valencia was 1,598-ton, 252-foot, iron-hulled passenger steamer built by the reputable William Cramp and Sons shipyard in Philadelphia in 1882. The ship had three cargo holds and four watertight compartments protecting the engine and boiler room, but was not fitted with a double bottom and her bulkheads were alleged to be insubstantial. The Valencia had a cruising speed of 11 knots and was licensed to carry 286 passengers. She carried seven lifeboats with a capacity of 181 persons, three life rafts with a capacity of 54 person, 368 life preservers and a Lyle line-throwing gun with 1,500 feet of manila line. When the Valencia was inspected on January 6, 1906, all of her equipment was accounted for and in good working order.

The Valencia was owned by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company who purchased it from the Pacific Packing and Navigation Company in 1902. The vessel was primarily engaged on the route between California and Alaska. But, in January 1906, she was diverted to the San Francisco-Seattle run, temporarily replacing the SS City of Puebla, laid up for repairs in San Francisco. The ship’s new master was Captain Oscar M. Johnson, who had been with the company 12 years, working his way up from quartermaster.

The Weather

On Saturday at 11:20 a.m., January 20, 1906, the Valencia left San Francisco in good weather bound for Victoria, B.C., and Seattle. On board were 108 passengers, nine officers and 56 crewmen. The ship reached Cape Mendocino, 190 miles north of San Francisco, early Sunday morning. Then the weather began to deteriorate, with constant rain and haze. Mariners call it “thick” weather. That was the last land or light seen by the Valencia until she wrecked on Vancouver Island.

The weather remained thick with strong winds blowing from the southwest. The Valencia was forced to navigate by dead reckoning, using compass courses and approximate distances sailed, to determine the ship’s position. Captain Johnson reckoned the Valencia would reach the Umatilla Lightship around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 1906. Then the quartermaster would start to take soundings to determine their position relative to the coastline. But a following wind and a strong three-knot northern current positioned the vessel more than 20 miles farther north than expected. The ship passed the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and, at 11:50 p.m., went onto Walla Walla Reef at Shelter Bight, 11 miles southeast of Cape Beale, on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.

A Night of Wind and Rain

It was high tide when the Valencia went aground, with rain, strong southeast winds blowing 25 to 35 miles an hour and heavy swells coming in from the ocean. First the ship struck a rock a few hundred yards offshore, rupturing the bottom of the hull and flooding the middle cargo hold. Then a large wave lifted the Valencia over the rock, driving her inshore. As waves swung the ship around, Captain Johnson, believing the ship would sink, ordered her beached, stern first. The vessel wound up on the reef, with the bow toward the open ocean, in about four fathoms of water, less than 100 yards from shore.

The coastline was a continuous 100-foot sheer rock cliff constantly pounded by heavy surf. Proceeding along the shoreline was impossible, and the top of the bluff was covered with trees and dense underbrush. A telephone/telegraph line, following a crude trail blazed through the forest, had been strung in the trees linking the Carmanah Light Station to Cape Beale and Bamfield Creek. The Valencia was trapped in an uninhabited wilderness with no means of communication or escape.

Panicked Actions and Errors

As a precaution, Captain Johnson ordered the crew to lower six lifeboats from the hurricane (uppermost) deck to the saloon deck and made fast to the rail, with no order to abandon ship. When the engines stopped, the electricity went out, leaving the ship in total darkness. The passengers, in a mild panic, began boarding the lifeboats, calling out to the deck hands to lower away. In the darkness and confusion, the davit crews, unable to determine if the orders were official, began launching the lifeboats. Within a half hour all six boats were gone.

One lifeboat had been loaded beyond capacity and the aft davit broke away, spilling more than 21 persons into the water. Everyone in the boat drowned. While lowering two of the lifeboats, one end hung up in the falls (an accident called “cockbilling”), upending the boats and dumping about 25 people into the sea. One crewman was rescued; all the others perished. Three lifeboats, carrying approximately 50 persons, were successfully launched; one disappeared, her fate unknown, and the other two capsized in the huge breakers. Only 12 men made it to relative safety, the others either drowned or were dashed against the rocks.

One survivor clambered onto a large rock near shore, only to be swept away by a large wave hours later. Two survivors gained entrance to a shallow cave, but the rising tide forced them onto the face of the cliff where they fell to their deaths. Nine survivors reached shore about 500 yards northwest but out of sight of the wreck. The party spent the night huddled among the rocks. At dawn on Tuesday, they climbed the 100-foot cliff.

Why Is the American Flag Sometimes Displayed Backwards on Military Uniforms? Mr. Answer Man Please Tell Us: Why Is the American Flag Sometimes Displayed Backwards on Military Uniforms?

If you’re an observant visitor, you might have noticed that the American flag on the side of the Space Shuttle Discovery on display at our Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center appears to be backwards.

No, it’s not a very large (literally and figuratively) NASA snafu. The “backwards” flag is actually part of the U.S. Flag Code, which applies to spacecraft, aircraft, and even service members’ uniform insignia.

According to United States Army regulations:

“The full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is worn so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right.” The flag must always be positioned to look like it is flying forward, so it’s really all about perspective.

Why Is the American Flag Sometimes Displayed Backwards on Military Uniforms?

Portrait of the prime crew of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. From left to right they are: Commander, Neil A. Armstrong, Command Module Pilot, Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. On July 20th 1969 at 4:18 PM, EDT the Lunar Module “Eagle” landed in a region of the Moon called the Mare Tranquillitatis, also known as the Sea of Tranquillity. After securing his spacecraft, Armstrong radioed back to earth: "Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed”. At 10:56 p.m. that same evening and witnessed by a worldwide television audience, Neil Armstrong stepped off the “Eagle”'s landing pad onto the lunar surface and said: “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” He became the first human to set foot upon the Moon.

If you have the flag positioned on your left shoulder (as you can see on the Apollo astronaut’s spacesuits), then the flag appears as it would flying in the breeze on a flag pole - with the star field facing forward as the wearer moves forward. On other military uniforms, you’ll see what’s called the “reverse side flag” on the right sleeve.

Where Did That Saying Come From

Where Did That Saying Come From?

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Pride comes before a fall”

Pride comes before a fall:

Meaning: The proverbial saying 'pride comes before a fall' is a warning that haughtiness and hubris leads to failure and loss. (Never read and believe your press clippings!)

History: The proverb 'pride comes before a fall' was originally 'pride goes before a fall' and this variant is still commonly used.

This has been used in biblical versions since at least Wycliffite's Bible in 1382:

“Pride goth befor contricioun, & befor falling the spirit shall ben enhauncid.”

The meaning of 'fall' these days is interpreted to be 'downfall; failure' but the biblical meaning indicates something more calamitous. Fall was there meant to indicate what in the OED defines thus:

“The action or fact of lapsing into sin or folly, or of yielding to temptation; moral decline, descent, or ruin.”

This is the fall that Eve, the original fallen woman, was said to have suffered by tasting the apple of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Where Did That Saying Come From? “Pride comes before a fall”

The proverb is one of the oldest in common use in English. It is alluded to in John Bale's book A mysterye of inyquyte..., 1545:

“For most commonlye the papistes are full of vayne glorye.

But it is alwayes yll spede when pryde goeth afore and shame cometh after.”

So, if early users of the proverb spoke of pride going before contrition or destruction or shame, when did people start saying 'pride comes before a fall'?

This variant appears to have started with a poem entitled The Two Trees by the American writer Caroline Orne, which was published in her book The Lady's Room, 1841:

“Pride oft goes before a fall;

And the sudden rushing tempest.”

The more recent variant 'pride comes before a fall', which is the more commonly used now, is also first found in America. The earliest citation that I can find of that form was printed in The Vermont Watchman and State Journal, July 1847.

It's notable that the best known personification of pride in English literature - Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, didn't result in his downfall and failure; the novel concludes with his happy marriage to Elizabeth Bennet.

Researchers control cattle microbiomes to reduce methane and greenhouse gases

Source: American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Summary: Researchers have learned to control the microbiome of cattle for the first time which could inhibit their methane production, and therefore reduce a major source of greenhouse gasses.

The findings from Prof. Itzhak Mizrahi's findings were published recently in Nature Communications. Prof. Mizrahi is a member of the Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN).

The animal microbiome is a scientifically unexplored area. It protects against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins and exerts great control over many aspects of animal and human physical systems. Microbes are introduced at birth and produce a unique microbiome that evolves over time.

Mizrahi and his group have been conducting a three-year experiment with 50 cows divided into two groups. One group gave birth naturally, and the other through cesarean section. That difference was enough to change microbiome development and composition microbiome of the cows from each group.

Researchers control cattle microbiomes to reduce methane and greenhouse gases

This finding enabled Mizrahi's team together with Prof. Eran Halperin's group at UCLA to develop an algorithm that predicts the microbiome development and how it will evolve over time based on its present composition.

“Now that we know we can influence the microbiome development, we can use this knowledge to modulate microbiome composition to lower the environmental impact of methane from cows by guiding them to our desired outcomes”, Mizrahi says.

Prof. Mizrahi has investigated the microbiome of cows, fish and other species to address world issues shaped by climate change. Reducing methane emissions from cows will reduce global warming. Engineering healthier fish, which is another of Mizrahi's projects, is especially important as the oceans empty of fish and aquaculture becomes the major source of seafood.

“Bye Bye Love” - The Everly Brothers 1957

“Bye Bye Love” video - The Everly Brothers
Album: “The Everly Brothers - They're Off And Running!”
Released 1957 video

About 30 other artists had previously rejected “Bye Bye Lovevideo before The Everly Brothers recorded it. It became their first hit in both the UK and U.S.

The husband-and-wife songwriting team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant wrote “Bye Bye Lovevideo. Together, this talented couple penned many huge hits for The Everly Brothers and other artists, including “Wake Up Little Susievideo and “All I Have To Do Is Dreamvideo The Bryants are credited with being the first songwriters to come to Nashville and make a living only by writing songs.

This was a favorite of Simon & Garfunkel, who included “Bye Bye Lovevideo on their classic Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Paul Simon tells the story about how when he and Art Garfunkel were kids, they took a bus to the nearest record store so they could buy the single, and it became a staple of their shows when they started performing. It was always a fun song for them to play, especially when the audience would supply the backbeat. For their Bridge Over Troubled Water recording, they recorded audiences clapping from some of their shows to incorporate into the mix.

According to legend, the Everlys were nonplussed about the song but were appreciative of the $64 fee that both brothers received for the session.

In 1995, a movie called Bye Bye Love hit theaters. The film stars Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine and Randy Quaid as divorced men navigating a web of relationships. The song “Bye Bye Lovevideo and a few other Everly Brothers tunes are featured in the film.

In a 1981 interview with Country Music People, Boudleaux recalled:

“I wrote 'Bye Bye Love' while traveling home one night. Felice was driving down the highway and I got the first verse and chorus right down there. I always make sure I have a pen and paper in the car for these occasions.”

“We really believed in the song and were disappointed when so many people turned it down. They said it was unsuitable, some even asked if we has anything better!”

Webb Pierce, a hugely popular country star of the '50s, recorded “Bye Bye Lovevideo six weeks after The Everly Brothers. When the duo got wind of Pierce's recording, they were worried his rendition would overshadow theirs. Don Everly put in a frantic call to producer Archie Bleyer. He recalled:

“I said, 'Archie, we're really in trouble - Webb Pierce has covered 'Bye Bye Love'. He said, 'Who's Webb Pierce?' Then he said, 'Don't worry about it, we're hitting pop.”

Bleyer was right. While Pierce's version took the #7 spot on the Country chart, it barely made a showing on the Hot 100, peaking at #73.

Joke of the Day

“Cave Drawings”

Written across the wall of the cave were the following symbols:

Joke of the Day

It was considered a unique find and the writings were said to be at least 3,000 years old! The piece of stone was removed, brought to the museum, and archaeologists from around the world came to study the ancient symbols. They held a huge meeting after months of conferences to discuss the meaning of the markings. The president of the society pointed to first drawing and said:

“This is a woman. We can see these people held women in high esteem.”

Joke of the Day

“You can also tell they were intelligent, as the next symbol is a donkey, so they were smart enough to have animals help them till the soil.”

Joke of the Day

“The next drawing is a shovel, which means they had tools to help them.”

Joke of the Day

“Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish which means that during a famine, they seek food from the sea.”

Joke of the Day

“The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrew.”

Joke of the Day

The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Then an old Jewish man stood up in the back of the room and said,

“Idiots... Hebrew is read from right to left... It says: Holy mackerel, dig the ass on that chick.”
